April 26, 2014  -  BOONE & SCENIC VALLEY RAILROAD  - Boone, Iowa
We are starting out the 2014 ride season on the B&SV.  We hope to have at least four trips during the day and possibly a night run.  Enjoy the 156' high bridge and the Des Moines River bridge by the Y-Camp.  Round trip mileage is about 20 miles for each run.  Set on at the depot will start at 7:00am with a 9:00am departure for the first trip.  Cost of the ride is $20.  Current membership in the Iowa Railroad Historical Society ( $25) is a railroad requirement also.  Please make out checks for the ride payable to FID and membership checks to Iowa Railroad Historical Society.  Carl Schneider is the EC for this excursion.  Motels in Boone are the Super 8 (800-800-8000) and the Amerihost (515-432-8168).  Contact Carl Schneider at 515-967-5181 or e-mail motorcarl@mchsi.com for more information.

May 16-18, 2014 -  APPANOOSE COUNTY RAILROAD  -  Centerville, Iowa    

This is the ride we refer to as the short ride using the 20 mile section between Centerville & the IC&E diamond. Friday evening we will set on at 6:30pm just south of the water tower in the southeast part of Centerville with a 7:00pm departure. We will travel 20 miles north to near the IC&E diamond & return for a 40 mile total night run.

Saturday set on for new arrivals will be at 8am with a 9:00am safety meeting & departure. Depending on the amount of cars we will try to get at least 3 trips with the last being an evening run. Total mileage is 120 miles. If there is any interest for the ones staying over we will have 1 run on Sunday. For a total of 40 miles. Please note there our no services along this short ride but we will take ample time between runs that you can drive to a nearby convenience store for breaks & lunch time.  Approximate round trip mileage for the 3 days is 200 miles.  Hyrails permitted.  The event is sponsored by First Iowa Division. May 24-26, 2014 -  MINNESOTA NORTHERN / DAKOTA NORTHERN RAILROADS    

The First Iowa Division will host a three (3) day Memorial Day excursion on the Minnesota Northern and Dakota Northern Railroads.   Approximate mileage is 336.   The excursion fee for all three days is $150.00 which does not include meals or motels.   Don Schoeb is the Excursion Coordinator.   This is a NARCOA insured event so all NARCOA rules will be enforced.   Hi-Rails are welcome on all three excursions.  

DAY 1 – Minnesota Northern Railroad – St. Hilaire, MN to Roseau, MN and return.   Approximate mileage will be 140 miles.   Set on will be at St. Hilaire, MN from 6:00-7:45 a.m. the North crossing by the elevator.   Safety meeting will take place at 7:45 a.m. with a departure time of 8 a.m. sharp.  This ride maybe subject to shorter mileage because the MNN has plans to upgrade 36 miles of track starting at Greenbush going South.   Anyone arriving after 7:45 a.m. will not be allowed to participate in this event.

June 11-13, 2014  SAN LUIS & RIO GRANDE RR – LA VETA PASS 

The First Iowa Division will host this three-day nearly 300-mile excursion through the San Luis Valley and over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains via LaVeta Pass.

This is a NARCOA insured excursion and all NARCOA rules will be enforced. Speeders on this excursion must be equipped with spark arrestors. We depart from the Alamosa RR yard each day. Daily safety meetings will be 20 minutes prior to departure. Len Jones is EC assisted by Carl Schneider.

Wednesday June 11 Set-on and safety inspections begin at 9AM. Departure time TBD. We will travel west stopping at Monte Vista for lunch and then continue west to Del Norte or as far as track is open. Then we return to Alamosa and leave our speeders in the RR yard over night. Round trip miles this day will be 35+. Speeders to be used on the LaVeta Pass run of the 12th must participate in this run in order to satisfy SL&RG personnel that all speeders are tuned for high altitude running.

Thursday June 12 W e depart for LaVeta at 7AM ; take the siding at Fir (top of the pass) until the Eastbound and Westbound passenger trains pass then continue thru LaVeta to end of track rights where we turn our speeders and return to La Veta for a lunch break if time permits. Then we head for Alamosa again taking the siding at Fir to allow the passenger trains to pass. Fir is an excellent location to get some steam train photos as the eastbound train climbs to the Pass. Carrying a lunch to eat along the way or during the break at Fir is suggested. Round trip miles this day will be about 150.

Friday June 13 We depart Alamosa at 6:30AM by speeder for Antonito where we board a bus and travel to Chama, NM to catch the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Narrow Gauge RR steam train back to Antonito arriving about 5:30PM then return by speeder to Alamosa where we set-off.  Round trip speeder miles for this day are about 60.

Fees. We are limited to 30 Speeders on this excursion. The cost will be $250 for the SLRG and $85 per person for tickets (lunch included) on the Cumbres & Toltec.   All funds must be sent to Len Jones no later than April 10, 2014. There will be no refunds of excursion fees after April 10 except in the event of cancellation of the excursion. Any paid registrant desiring to drop out after April 10 should contact Len Jones to see if a replacement is available from the waiting list in order to receive reimbursement.

Payment may be made with check, money order or Credit Card.  Checks or money orders should be made payable to First Iowa Division and mailed to Len Jones. For those wishing to pay by credit card please notify Len Jones and an invoice will be emailed to you from PayPal. A 3% surcharge to cover the Pay Pal fees will be included in your invoice total. Just follow the easy instructions to make your payment. You do not need to have a PayPal account to use this feature.

NOTE: Participants are NOT required to purchase the discounted C&TSRR tickets through the FID or to even ride the C&TSRR but will not be able to return to Alamosa via speeder until the group departs around 6PM. Set-off on arrival at Antonito can be arranged with prior notice.

July 11-13, 2014 -  APPANOOSE COUNTY RAILROAD  -  Centerville, Iowa

We refer to this as the full ride riding the entire APNC. We will start out with an evening run Friday evening with set on at 6:30pm just south of the water tower in the southeast part of Centerville with a 7:00pm safety meeting & departure traveling out 20 miles just short of the IC&E diamond & returning for a 40 mile total night run for the early arrival people. Saturday set on will start at 6:30am with 8:00am safety meeting & departure we will travel 35 miles north to Albia on a combination  of welded & jointed track. We will cross the IC&E diamond just south of Moravia with the possibility of seeing a train there.  At Albia our line will cross the BNSF on an elevated crossing prior to reaching our turn around point in the Albia yard. After turning in Albia we will return south to Moravia to the depot museum where we will take our lunch break. The ladies at the museum always have a great meal prepared for us at a reasonable price which includes free admission to the museum.  Please RSVP with a lunch count so we can give the ladies a good number of people to expect.  After lunch we will again cross the diamond & return to Centerville for a round trip of 70 miles. For those wishing to stay we will have another evening run at 7:00pm 20 miles out for a 40 mile total. July 19-20 , 2014  -   DMV&WRR - Britton, South Dakota
     
The First Iowa Division will host a 2-day ride on the DMV&W Railroad at Britton, SD. Tentative Seton Friday evening for those arriving early. Seton begins at 7 am Saturday morning with a 9:00 am departure from Britton SD to near the yard limits east of Aberdeen and back. We will stop both ways at Claremont for a break. Arrive mid afternoon at Britton for a 2 hour break. We will then depart Britton at 5:30 pm for supper at Rutland, ND before heading to Geneseo, ND where we will turn our cars. We will then depart to Britton as night falls for an evening run in the dark. Make sure your headlights are in excellent working condition. Cars will be left on the track Saturday evening at Britton. Total mileage is approximately 146 for the day. Day Two – We will depart at 9 am from Britton, SD and duplicate our previous evening excursion route. We will stop at Rutland both ways for a break. Return early afternoon to Britton where we will set off for the weekend.   We will set on by the elevator in downtown Britton at 7:00am. Departure is scheduled for 9:00am.Approximate round trip mileage for this excursion is appx. 260 miles.

Aug. 1-3, 2014 -  VFW Ride APPANOOSE COUNTY RAILROAD  -  Centerville, Iowa

The First Iowa Division has again been asked to provide rides to the public for a fund raiser that the VFW hosts for restoring the Centerville Depot. This will be conducted the same as last year we will operate under their insurance policy Saturday August 2, 2014.  Set on will begin at 6:30am just south of the water tower in the southeast part of town.

I would like to thank everyone who came out & volunteered their cars & time last year & hope you can attend this year as we had many riders. As an added bonus for doing so the First Iowa Division will have an evening ride Friday August 1st  with set on at 6:30pm & safety meeting & departure at 7:00pm riding up to the diamond & back. Sunday August 3rd we will have a safety meeting at 8:00am & ride out 20 miles & back.  This will be a free ride for any one who wishes to donate their time & car for the VFW ride.

Aug. 16, 2014 -  IOWA NORTHERN RAILROAD  -  Oelwein, Iowa

  We have a new ride scheduled for the Oelwein line of the Iowa Northern Railroad.  This is in conjunction with Oelwein Railroad/Heritage Days.  The CGW tower and the museum will be open along with the FP-7 and two cabooses.  There will also be a slide show at 1pm on the CGW for those interested.  We will set on at the yards near the museum at the west end of 2nd St. SW.  Turn west off Hwy 150 in downtown Oelwein on 2nd St. SW,  drive about two blocks straight into the yard.  Set on will be at 7:00am with a 9:00am departure.  Cost is $35 per car.

Aug. 29 - Sept. 1, 2014 -  BLACK HILLS CENTRAL RAILROAD  -  Hill City, South Dakota

We will make a total of 10 trips over the four days. We will ride through the scenic Black Hills from Hill City to Keystone, SD numerous times and will be following the 1880 Train throughout the days.  There will be an evening excursion on Friday, August 29, 4 round trips on Saturday, August 30 with a picnic lunch at Oblivion where we will witness an old west shoot out and train robbery.  We will also have 2 hours of free time at Keystone during the last trip of the day to allow participant time to explore the town and have dinner there.  There will be 4 rounds trips on Sunday and one trip on Monday for a total of 180 beautiful mountain miles.  Everyone should be on the way home by 10:00 am on Monday

We will set on at Hill City depot at 15:45-17:30 MDT on track # 3. Departure is scheduled for 18:15 MDT.
Approximate round trip mileage for this excursion is 18 miles per trip. This ride is limited to 24 cars.

Sept. 27, 2014  COLUMBIA TERMINAL ( COLT ) -  Columbia, Missouri
Come join us on this ride which runs northeast from Columbia to Centralia on an ex-Wabash track.  We will set on beginning at 6:30am and have a scheduled 8:00am departure for the first run.  See below for a set on location change!  We will run this line two times during the day.  Each run is approximately 37 miles round trip so we will have a total for the day of about 74 miles.  There is a Lee's Chicken  across the street from the tracks for our lunch break.  Cost of this ride is $45 per car.  There are several motels in Columbia with many at the junction of I-70 and Hwy 63.  There is a Super 8 (800-800-8000 or 573-474-8488), Ramada Inn (537-449-0051), and Econo Lodge (573-442-1191) just to name a few.  The set on location for the ride will be at the COLT facilities at 6501 Brown Station Road .  Take Hwy 63 north to Rt. B and turn right (NE). After crossing the railroad tracks on Rt. B, turn right on Brown Station Road and continue until you see the dinner train parked to your left. Sept. 28, 2014  -  FT. LEONARD WOOD ARMY BASE  -  Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri

Set on will be at 8:30am with a 10:00am departure.  As you enter the fort from I-44, be in the left lane and pull into the inspection area by the security check point.   Please bring lunch or snacks along as there won't be a stop for lunch between runs.  We will make two trips on this 20-mile scenic line through the Ozarks  to the connection with the BNSF at Bundy Junction.  Due to security issues,  everyone will need a picture ID, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and be prepared for a vehicle inspection.  Cost of this ride is $35.  Motels are the Red Roof Inn (573-336-2510) and the Budget Inn (573-336-5212), all in the St. Robert - Waynesville area.  Frosty Farrell is the EC for this ride.  Contact Carl Schneider at 515-967-5181 or e-mail motorcarl@mchsi.com for more information.

Oct. 11-12, 2014 - MINNESOTA PRAIRIE LINE  -  Redwood Falls, Minnesota

First Iowa Division will host a two day Fall Colors excursion over the MPLI.  Set on begins at 6:30 am on Saturday at the main crossing at North Redwood with a 9:00 am departure.  We will travel to Norwood and back with stops both ways at the historical depot at Fairfax and an included lunch at Green Isle.  Sunday, set on begins at 7:00 am with a 9:00 am departure.  We will travel to Hanley Falls and back with a stop at the historical Belview Depot on the way over and included lunch at Hanley Falls.  There will be time to visit Minnesota’s Machinery Museum while in Hanley Falls.  We should return for setoff by midafternoon. Approximate round trip mileage for this excursion is 188 miles.  Hyrails permitted.

 Cost is $100 for the weekend and includes lunch both Saturday and Sunday for 2 participants.  Additional meals can be purchased for $7.50 each.  PRE REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT IS REQUIRED

  Alexander Ramsey Park -The campground, operated by the Redwood Falls City Recreation Department, has 31 sites with 50 amp connections in addition to water and sewer hookups for RVs.   There are restrooms and showers available.  A limited supply of firewood is available without cost.
